Williams Lake is accessible by both land and air, and is just a short drive from the west coast
By Road:
This region is woven with four lane highways, paved secondary roadways, gravel and dirt backcountry roads and trails. The primary north/south route is Highway 97 or the" Gold Rush Trail" (look for road signs). The east/west routes are Highway 20 ("The Freedom Highway") and Highway 24 ("The Fishing Highway").
From Vancouver, travelers can route through Whistler onto the Duffey Lake Road to enter Cariboo Country at Lillooet. Another option is via the Trans Canada Highway (1) east to Cache Creek and then north on Highway 97.
Take note that the entrance to Bella Coola is unpaved and very steep (we call it "The Hill"). Almost all the back roads are gravel or dirt, so you are well advised to check a BC Forest Service" Forest Region Recreational Map" (available through the Cariboo Tourism Association or a local Visitor Infocentre) before heading out. For travel conditions, call 1-900-565-4997.Finally, rental vehicles are available throughout the region. If you plan to travel on gravel back roads, be aware that any damage is the driver's responsibility. BC residents using rental vehicles are well advised to purchase extra ICBC coverage.
By Air:
Williams Lake Airport offers daily scheduled flights to Williams Lake and Quesnel from Vancouver. Flight time is about one hour.
Nimpo Lake, in the heart of the Chilcotin, is the" Floatplane Capital of BC". Imagine what scenery must look like from the skies above...rocky mountain peaks, dense forests, rolling plain~ and lake after lake (over 8,000 of them, in fact). There are many local charter airlines that provide, bird's-eye view of Cariboo Country's more remote terrain. Scheduled air service is available from Vancouver, Williams Lake, Quesnel, Anahim Lake, Nimpo Lake, Chilko Lake, Bella Coola, Hakai Pass and Bella Bella. There are many landing strips throughout this region.
By Ferry:
BC Ferries now travels to the Central Coast area of Cariboo Country from Port Hardy to Bella Coola. For ferry schedules, times and reservations, contact BC Ferries, 1-888-BCFERRY (1-888-223-3779). Bon Voyage!!
